About the Book
Winging It
A Story of Love, Loss, and Fifty Chickens
The book opens with Pauline realizing that her worst nightmare has come to pass. Bill, her husband of 23 years does not know who she is. He has dementia. Winging It follows Pauline’s journey as she juggles a complete change in plans created by Bill’s condition. And that’s when the fun begins.
Pauline uproots herself and Bill from their condo in the city to a 5-Acre hobby farm an hour away. She needed to be near family for support. Knowing nothing about farming, Pauline (sometimes with Bill’s help) embarks on a hilarious how-to-be-farmers learning curve, chasing escapee chickens around the yard, mastering how to flick a laden stall fork out to the poo pile without wearing any of it, and learning to carry water to a barn suffering from frozen pipes. With great poignancy, she also learns that it’s possible to cherish the husband who is “disappearing” before her very eyes while fulfilling the role of number one caregiver.
With humour and challenging doses of reality, Winging It offers caregivers a glimpse into how Pauline handles some of life’s surprises.
